Australia

The following text is written in the company of María Patiño, a graduate student of a private school in Australia, for this reason it is she who contributes to this project with a detailed explanation about the school and citizen environment in which she lives, which allowed to understand more fully and in depth the reality of Australia in the school environment from the perspective of a native. It is of great importance to start from the point that it is not possible to generalize the entire educational front from a single perspective, it is worth clarifying that the criticisms and opinions expressed in the text have a general approach and recognize the existence of institutions that make use of different and innovative methodologies and dynamics to teach.

Interview

Australia is characterized by having one of the best academic and advanced programs in the world, having one of the highest rankings in the world, thanks to a program that significantly supports students in all stages of their development. In Australia, as in most countries in the world, there is both public and private education. All public schools in Australia are governed by the same standards and at the same time, the same methods of qualification, rigor and discipline, likewise, private schools are governed by the methods and parameters of public schools, but have autonomy and freedom to design other educational models, allowing communication and dialogue between public and private.

Private education has a lot of variety in the way it grades student excellence and intelligence, depending on the school stage they are in. There are alphabetical and numerical systems, from A to E and from 1 to 8 (model used in the dynamics of the International Baccalaureate) or the classic system from 1 to 100, being this one, the most used in both public and private schools, dividing this grade in four academic periods, which means that each academic period must have a total percentage of 25 points, so that at the end of the academic year they can obtain the one hundred points. However, each subject is graded from 1 to 100 points, being 80 points the minimum to obtain the approval of the subject, taking into account the maximum of four subjects lost to make up the academic year.

The government or public "preschool" is developed in two years. In the first year, they are called "good-hearted people," including children who have turned three, participating two or three days a week. The second year, preschool, requires full-time study and has become a mandatory course since 2013. Although it was not a required course before, almost 90% of the children attended preschool because it was considered a preparatory course.

Elementary school begins at age six (completed or nearing completion by June 30 of this year). From first grade to sixth grade, a six-year period. Courses of study consist of eight subjects: English, mathematics, science, environment and society (including geography and economics), technology, and physical education. In addition to these important subjects and included in the normal daily activities of the school, there are other activities such as music, swimming (a mandatory course offered by the school, about two weeks a year), dance and gymnastics.

The Western Australian Department of Education had issued a new directive on student assessment methods. First, knowledge of a subject is divided into eight levels. Based on the average evaluation carried out, the level that each student must reach in each academic year was determined. For example, taking English as a reference, it is estimated that students should have subject knowledge in the 2nd grade of 3rd grade, 2nd to 3rd grade of 5th grade, and 3rd to 4th grade of 3rd grade. 6th grade, at least 9th grade 4th grade Once the level of the school year has been determined, voting will be based on the following letters: A = excellent, B = good, C = satisfied, D = restricted, and E = very low.

In elementary schools, there are few tasks that require children to spend their free time reading or doing practical work related to observing or investigating the surrounding environment. In addition, in the early years of elementary school, the focus of education is on research and socialization by children of those topics that interest them, with the goal of learning to speak in public, share their thoughts and emotions, and of course, listen to what others are saying.

High school begins in grades seven through twelve and lasts six years. Until the ninth grade, the eight subjects studied in elementary school remain unchanged. From the 10th grade, the core subjects are reduced to six subjects and by the 12th grade there are five subjects, only one of which is a real compulsory subject, English, while the others are chosen by the students. The subjects chosen are usually based on what the students want to do after the compulsory education. In the senior year, it serves students and parents to better choose their future. At the end of Year 12 students have to give the WACE, Western Australia Certificate of Education. This is a nationally recognized certification (from 2015) for universities, employers and vocational training institutes. To achieve this, the student must have met certain requirements.

There is a marked difference in the way students wear uniforms, since most private schools require uniforms and public schools do not (they attend as private individuals).

In private high school, the student can choose the academic level in which he or she wants to be, depending on his or her needs and preferences. It all depends on what is understood by what he can research. This does not change his academic process, it only facilitates the way of learning. There are schools that work in a personalized way and are specialized in students who find it difficult to concentrate; there are approximately 5 students per classroom, but those are already exceptions to the rule.

The last academic years of the students, unlike other countries in the last year of Bachelor Education in Australia, reaches the 12th grade (as requested by the IB) which adds one more year of the traditional and is something that is being implemented in many countries like the United States, Norway, Switzerland and other Nordic countries (In Colombia there are schools that already have this modality), this makes the student can visualize what he is going to study in his university undergraduate. It focuses on the subjects of their interest, removing those that are not useful for the career and having the possibility to deepen in what they like. This applies to private and public schools.
